Normally I don't like to give ID's for the greatest relic site on the planet, but I know what his item is and since your buds with them... I'll throw them a bone.

His item is the retainer for a "lead rope" for a halter. The lead rope passed onto itself and was crimped... in the crook was the snap link. My guess is fairly modern as I've never seen a military halter with that set up. One can go to a tack store and see them today.
